Jarvis Access status

Red — serious concerns

Independent assessment

The gardens have accessible provision, but unramped steps, a ban on powered mobility equipment and inaccessible upper floors create serious barriers inside the Castle.

Why this rating

Hever Castle offers garden routes, wheelchair hire, audio-guide hearing loops, Braille information, assistance-dog access and a free 1:1 carer ticket. However, the Castle and courtyard prohibit motorised wheelchairs and scooters, the entrance route includes several unramped steps, and only the six ground-floor rooms are suitable for wheelchair use because spiral stairs are the sole route to the upper floors.

What to know before you go

Wheelchair and scooter users are advised to keep to hard-surfaced and shingle garden paths. Motorised wheelchairs and mobility scooters cannot enter the Castle or courtyard. The Castle route includes an unramped step into the Gatehouse, three more steps into the courtyard and further threshold steps. Only the six rooms on the ground floor are suitable for wheelchair use; spiral stairs are the only route to the two upper floors.
