Jarvis Access status
Red — serious concerns
Independent assessmentSevere reported Ride Access Pass capacity barriers, fragmented ear-defender guidance and the large, hilly site create serious concerns about dependable and well-communicated access.
Merlin’s published terms require advance Ride Access Pass approval and a separate reservation for every visit, while Chris Jarvis reports severe capacity constraints. A proposed February 2026 reduced-criteria trial was paused, and current guidance continues to accept Difficulty with Crowds. Official sensory information is also fragmented: Merlin’s general FAQ says guests may bring ear defenders, the main Alton Towers accessibility page mentions limited hire, and a separate ride-specific FAQ explains that tethers are required on seven named attractions and ear defenders are prohibited on five major rides. A visitor reported learning the tether rule only on site and finding that spares were not available at every affected ride; this account has not been independently verified. Jarvis Access considers the fragmented guidance and reported inconsistency a serious communication concern, not a legal finding of negligence. The Ride Access Pass dispute forms part of the live case Jarvis v Merlin Attractions Operations Limited at Leeds County Court and has not yet been determined.

Verified Ride Access Pass update
Current rules and trial status
Reduced-criteria trial paused; four eligibility symbols currently accepted
Merlin proposed a February 2026 half-term trial with narrower Ride Access Pass eligibility, but paused it before proceeding after community feedback. Current resort guidance continues to accept Difficulty with Crowds, Difficulty Standing, Level Access and Urgent Access to Toilets.
Before the visit
An approved Nimbus Access Card or free Merlin Digital Access Pass does not guarantee a visit reservation. A separate, zero-cost RAP reservation must be made in the Merlin Ride Access Pass app before every visit. Merlin recommends applying and booking early; its current terms say to apply at least three months before the intended visit. Up to three future RAP visit reservations may be held per resort.
At the resort
The app operates a digital virtual queue rather than instant ride access. The passholder may ride with up to three companions, subject to their red or yellow support category and ride-specific safety requirements. A manual timecard may be offered if a significant network or app failure affects multiple users.
Visitor-reported sensory-access warning
Ear defenders and ride tethers
Ear-defender rules vary by ride and may require a tether
Alton Towers’ ride-specific FAQ says ear defenders require a tether on seven named attractions, may be worn without one on a separate list, and are not permitted on five major rides. The main accessibility page only mentions limited ear-defender hire, while Merlin’s general FAQ says guests may bring ear defenders without explaining these ride restrictions.
Officially listed as requiring a tether
- Bluey the Ride: Here Come the Grannies!

- TH13TEEN
- Rita
- Wicker Man
- Runaway Mine Train
- Spinball Whizzer
Ear defenders currently not permitted
- Toxicator

Reported experience
A visitor told Jarvis Access that they only discovered the tether requirement at the park and that spare tethers were not available at every affected ride. The site founder has seen similar accounts in visitor groups. Jarvis Access has not independently verified on-the-day tether availability.
Why Jarvis Access is highlighting this
Jarvis Access considers the fragmented official information and reported on-the-day inconsistency a serious accessibility-communication concern. When sensory protection may determine whether a disabled visitor can use a ride, the restriction and the availability of compatible tethers should be clear before travel. This raises questions about due care in pre-visit communication, but it is not a legal finding of negligence or liability.
Before you visit: Check the ride-specific FAQ shortly before travelling and ask the Merlin Accessibility Team to confirm which rides will require a tether and whether one will be available. Do not assume that a suitable spare tether will be available at every ride.

The Theme Park covers a vast, very hilly site and Alton Towers warns that steep inclines can make powered mobility equipment unstable. Ear-defender rules vary by ride: some require a tether, five major rides do not permit them, and a visitor has reported inconsistent availability of spare tethers. The Ride Access Pass must also be approved and reserved before each visit through the Merlin app.
